The Legacy: 30+ Years of AI Research
The foundations of VRAIN rest on more than three decades of pioneering artificial intelligence research at the Universitat Politècnica de València. The constituent research groups that today form VRAIN have been actively engaged in AI research since the early 1990s, building a national and international reputation supported by extensive scientific output and recognition.
The Formation: 2019-2021
April 2019: The Valencian Institute of Artificial Intelligence Research (VRAIN) was initially established, bringing together six research groups with aligned interests in artificial intelligence fields.
2020: VRAIN merged with the Research Center on Software Production Methods (PROS), founded in 2008, adding critical expertise in software engineering and model-driven development to the institute's capabilities.
June 2021: The Consell of the Valencian Government officially recognized VRAIN as a University Research Institute through Decree 78/2021, dated June 4, 2021. This recognition marked the culmination of years of collaborative work and visionary commitment to artificial intelligence excellence.
European Integration and Recognition
Following its establishment, VRAIN actively integrated into Europe's AI research ecosystem. The institute became a member of CAIRNE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe), the continent's largest AI research network, connecting with leading European AI research institutions committed to advancing trustworthy and human-centered artificial intelligence.
VRAIN also established its presence in major European research consortia including EFFRA (European Factories of the Future Research Association), RENIC (National Network for Cybersecurity Research Excellence), BDVA (Big Data Value Association), and AIOTI (Alliance for Internet of Things and Edge Computing Innovation), strengthening its position within the European AI research landscape.
Today and Tomorrow
Since its establishment, VRAIN has been located on the VERA campus of the Universitat Politècnica de València, with additional facilities on the Alcoy campus. The institute continues to grow its research capacity, expand its international collaborations, and deepen its technology transfer activities, positioning itself as a driving force in the responsible development of artificial intelligence for the benefit of society.
