Overview

The Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN) is a leading AI research center at the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), established as a University Research Institute in 2021 through Decree 78/2021 of the Valencian Government.

With over 176 researchers from eight specialized research groups and more than 30 years of collective experience in artificial intelligence, VRAIN stands as one of the largest AI research centers in Spain and a key reference point in Europe for both fundamental and applied AI research.

Research Excellence

VRAIN's research spans nine major AI research areas, from natural language processing and machine learning to intelligent agents and software production methods. These research areas drive the development of innovative applications across strategic sectors including healthcare, industry, agriculture, security, autonomous robotics, energy, and environmental sustainability.

The institute maintains a strategic balance between basic research and practical applications, with a strong emphasis on technology transfer and doctoral training. Our commitment to Trustworthy, Ethical, and Responsible AI positions us at the forefront of human-centered artificial intelligence development.

Technology Transfer and Innovation

VRAIN actively bridges the gap between cutting-edge research and real-world applications through:

  • 24 software solutions and patents protecting innovative AI technologies
  • 35 specialized AI services available to industry and organizations
  • Extensive industry partnerships ranging from local SMEs to international corporations

As part of the Scientific Unit for Technology Development (UCIE), funded by the Valencian Institute for Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) and the European Union, VRAIN is dedicated to making artificial intelligence accessible, ethical, explainable, and unbiased for the benefit of society.

International Recognition

VRAIN is an active member of CAIRNE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe), Europe's largest network for AI research excellence, contributing to the advancement of trustworthy, human-centered AI across the continent.

The institute participates in leading international AI research networks including EFFRA (European Factories of the Future Research Association), RENIC (National Network for Cybersecurity Research Excellence), BDVA (Big Data Value Association), and AIOTI (Alliance for Internet of Things and Edge Computing Innovation), connecting with top research institutions and industry partners across Europe and beyond.
