Overview

The Valencian Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence (VRAIN) is a University Research Institute of the Universitat Politècnica de València, established through Decree 78/2021 of the Valencian Government. With more than 176 researchers organised into eight research groups, the institute is one of the largest AI research centres in Spain. Its constituent groups have been active in AI research for over 30 years, building a record of scientific output and international recognition across both fundamental and applied research.

Research Excellence

VRAIN's research is organised into nine areas: Natural Language Processing, Planning and Reasoning, Software Analysis, Verification and Testing, Machine Learning and Deep Learning, Natural Computing, Computational Logic and Automated Reasoning, Intelligent Agents and Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence, Artificial Intelligence Privacy and Security, and Software Production Methods. These areas are applied across sectors including health, industry, privacy and security, and environmental sustainability, among others.

The institute maintains a balance between basic and applied research, with sustained emphasis on doctoral training and technology transfer. A particular focus of VRAIN's research agenda is Trustworthy, Ethical, and Responsible AI — encompassing the ethical, legal, and social dimensions of AI system design from a multidisciplinary perspective.

Technology Transfer and Innovation

VRAIN bridges research and application through its technology transfer programme, which includes 24 software solutions and patents and 35 specialised AI services available to industry and organisations, alongside contracts with companies at local, national, and international level.

As part of the Scientific Unit for Technology Development (UCIE), funded by the Valencian Institute for Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) and the European Union, VRAIN works to make AI accessible, ethical, explainable, and unbiased for the benefit of society, with particular attention to small and medium-sized enterprises in the Valencian Community.

International Recognition

VRAIN is an active member of CAIRNE (Confederation of Laboratories for Artificial Intelligence Research in Europe), Europe's largest AI research network. The institute also participates in EFFRA, RENIC, BDVA, AIOTI, NESSI, and Inndromeda, connecting with research institutions and industry partners across Europe.
