The VRAIN-UPV Institute, recognized as a center of excellence by the European Commission, participates in the TAILOR project.
The VRAIN institute of the Universitat Politècnica de València (UPV), which has been recognized by the European Commission as a center of excellence in artificial intelligence (AI) research, will participate in the European TAILOR project, a key initiative for the future of artificial intelligence (AI) in Europe.
AI is an essential technology for responding to many of the enormous challenges we face. With a major impact on our daily lives, it is now key to managing and responding to COVID19 and will have a significant impact on all business sectors. The TAILOR project will help to address all of this.
Networks of centers of excellence to promote ethical and reliable AI
Recently approved by the European Commission under the Towards a vibrant European Network of AI Excellence Centres action, TAILOR’s main objective is to develop networks of centers of excellence in order to boost Europe’s research capacity, thereby increasing its status as a research powerhouse in the field of AI and, in so doing, fostering its attractiveness to scientists and new talent. In turn, this initiative is expected to contribute to the development of ethical and reliable AI, a made in Europe brand.
In any case, to take advantage of all the opportunities it offers and minimize its risks, reliable, human-centered and trustworthy AI is needed. In this respect, Europe is taking important steps to become the world center of trusted AI.
55 members, 4 of them Spanish
TAILOR, promoted by the international network CLAIRE -to which the UPV belongs-, involves a total of 55 European partners, both universities and technology centers and companies, all of them international references in the field of AI. Among them is the VRAIN Institute of the UPV, one of the 4 Spanish members of the consortium along with the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and the University of Malaga.
The danger of poor regulation of AI
“Reliability still requires significant basic research,” emphasizes Vicent Botti, director of the VRAIN Institute and principal investigator of the project at UPV. “The purpose of TAILOR is to build a solid research network, which will provide the scientific basis to entrench responsible, reliable, safe and transparent AI. People’s behavior is regulated by numerous laws, yet algorithms are subject to very few legal rules. This is inappropriate and dangerous, as AI systems increasingly interfere in our lives, often without our knowledge. This should be controlled and TAILOR will contribute to that control, to achieve trustworthy AI,” he adds.
TAILOR will establish a strategic roadmap for the development of trustworthy AI, supported by five basic research programs. “Each program forms virtual study environments with many of Europe’s top AI researchers, addressing the main scientific challenges identified in the roadmap,” Botti notes. Likewise, TAILOR will drive a set of mechanisms to support innovation, commercialization and knowledge transfer to industry.
12 million budget
The project, funded by the European Union’s Horizon 2020 program, has a budget of 12 million euros and is coordinated by Linköping University (Sweden).
